The Southern Ontario
Sprints made their first ever visit to the Brockville Ontario Speedway on
Saturday May 31st. Although bad weather threatened most of the northeast
and closed nearly every race track in the region the event at Brockville
was not only completed but a was a great success.
From the first hot lap session to the A-Main the 'Wiley One' Warren
Mahoney was fast and an instant contender. In the first heat race Warren
would start second and pull away quickly to the front. No one was able to
catch him as he recorded the heat win.
In the 20 lap A-Main
Warren started on the pole position and again was the car to beat. The top
seven positions for most of the night swapped back and forth with any of
the drivers in contention. Warren weaved his way through traffic and
withstood challenges from Rick Wilson and Keith Dempster. The turning
point of the night for Mahoney came with just four laps remaining when
Brian McDonald flipped viciously down the front stretch and into the turn
one jersey barriers. (Brian would be okay but the car was destroyed.) On
the ensuing restart Steve Poirier began to make his charge and in the
closing laps got by the #25. Poirier went on to win the race while Warren
Mahoney finished second. All in all it was a great evening for the driver
out of Lefroy, Ontario.
Warren Mahoney and the rest of the Southern Ontario Sprints will be back
on the road on Saturday June 14th at the Brighton Speedway. For more
