The 2008
Southern Ontario Sprints season drew to a close at the
Brighton Speedway on Labour Day Weekend. For Warren
Mahoney the stakes were high as the #25 team headed into
the final weekend of the schedule just 8 points back of
leader Glenn Styres.
The
weekend started off well for Mahoney as he finished 5th
in the July 12th rain date make-up feature Saturday
night while Styres struggled and finish 8th. The
finish placed Mahoney 7 points ahead with 2 events
remaining. The regularly scheduled events
for August 30th then took place. Warren would have to
start 11th in the feature and made his way to 7th by the
end of the 20 lap event. Styres however won the feature
and re-took the point lead with one race remaining. With
everything on the line Sunday night the two went back to
battle with 24 point separating the #0 and #25 teams.
Styres struggled in the feature and cut down a tire in
the opening laps. He managed to stay on the lead lap
though and keep Warren in site. With an 8th place finish
in the 20 lap main event and a 10th for Styres the 2008
Championship would go to the #0 team. Glenn captured the
title while Warren finished second just 17 points back
of the top spot. It marked the second consecutive title
for Styres and he became the first three-time SOS
champion.
With the points chase decided Warren Mahoney and the #25
team get ready for the 4th Annual Canadian Sprint Car
Nationals at Ohsweken Speedway, Friday September 12th
and Saturday September 13th. For more information visit www.ohswekenspeedway.com. |
